Ketone Labs Unveils Groundbreaking Research on goBHB:The True Power of Ketone Supplements and Ketone Precursors

Salt Lake City, Utah – June 21, 2024 - Ketone Labs is excited to announce two new pivotal studies revealing the true potential of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) sources in enhancing energy, focus, and metabolic health. Conducted by NNB Labs, these studies challenge traditional metrics for evaluating the efficacy of different BHB sources, highlighting the importance of measuring total ketone levels and net ATP yields from different BHB sources.

Moving “Beyond the Peak” Measurements: The Comprehensive AUC Approach

Traditional assessments of ketone supplements and precursors have focused on measuring peak blood ketone levels, offering only a brief snapshot of their impact. The new study, “Beyond the Peak: Comparing the Duration and Quantity of Ketones from Three D-BHB Supplements,” introduces a more comprehensive measurement metric: the Area Under the Curve (AUC). This measurement considers the total amount of ketones in the blood over time, providing a more accurate evaluation of a supplement's efficacy and duration.

Key Findings:

  • Equivalent Total Ketone Production: Despite variations in peak levels, the total quantity of ketones produced by different D-BHB sources over a two-hour period were found to be relatively equivalent.

  • Sustained Ketone Exposure: The AUC metric highlights the importance of sustained ketone exposure, crucial for ongoing metabolic benefits from exogenous ketone supplementation.

The True Value of BHB Sources: Net ATP Yield

The real advantage of BHB lies in its ability to generate ATP, the primary energy currency of the body. To accurately assess a BHB source’s effectiveness, it's essential to examine its net ATP yield.

The second study, “Impact of Different BHB Substrates and Precursors on Liver ATP,” unveils significant differences in net ATP yield among various BHB sources.

Key Findings:

  • Increased Liver ATP Production with BHB Acids: Intriguingly, both D-BHB and newly introduced L-BHB forms of BHB acid were found to deliver significant and continuous amounts of ATP to the liver.

  • Liver ATP Energy Cost of Converting 1,3-Butanediol into BHB: 1,3-butanediol, a common ketone precursor, and also found in large amounts in esters, was found to be very energy inefficient in its conversion to BHB, consuming significant amounts of Liver ATP in the conversion process to BHB acid.

  • goBHB: The Gold Standard of Cellular Energy

The study evidence is clear: BHB acid provides an efficient, direct and sustained ATP boost, meeting our evolutionary need for stable, efficient fuel during food scarcity, especially when compared to BHB sources containing 1,3-butanediol. Additionally, the study highlights potential health risks associated with 1,3-butanediol due to it being an alcohol, which may affect liver and kidney health.

Empowering Products with goBHB

goBHB should be a foundational ingredient for any supplement. This ensures consumers will experience the most efficient and sustainable energy source. goBHB delivers a clean, powerful boost to cellular function without compromising net ATP yield or critical product safety.
